Sleeping Sickness is a disease found in Africa. One of the Prominent symptoms of this disease is uncontrollable sleep and hence the disease is known as Sleeping Sickness.

- It is an endemic infectious disease caused by a parasite known as Trypanosome.
- This parasite is transmitted in the bodies of human beings through the medium of a fly known as the tsetse fly that is specifically found only in Africa.
- When the fly bites a human being,the infection goes into his blood resulting in minor symptoms to appear.
- This disease becomes more severe when the infection spread in the central nervous system and reaches the brain.
- Sleeping Sickness is found in Africa and is extremely rare in other parts of the world.However, if a person has travelled or lived in Africa for sometime, he has high chances of suffering from this disease.
- Uncontrollable urge to sleep
- Fever
- Headache
- Anxiety
- Drowsiness
- Mood Swings
- Swollen nodule where the fly has bitten
- Swollen nodes all over the body
- Sweating
- Eflornithine(for T. Gambiense only)
- Melarsoprol
- Pentamidine
- suramin(Antrypol)
- Some patients may receive combination therapy.
- A physical examination may show signs of inflammation of the brain and its covering, the meninges(meningoencephalitis)
- Blood Smear
- Cerebrospinal fluid tests
- Complete blood count(CBC)
- Lymph node aspiration
- Specific IgM levels in the cerebrospinal fluid may be helpful.
- Insect control measures can help prevent the spread of sleeping sickness in high-risk areas.
- Without treatment, death may occur within 6 months from cardiac failure or from T.rhodesiense infection itself.T.gambiense infection causes the classic "sleeping sickness" disease and gets worse more quickly,often over a few weeks.Both diseases should be treated immediately.
